Welcome to Ballymenaunited

A fish hook is a tool used for catching fish. It pierces the fish in the mouth or snags the fish’s body. Fishermen have employed fish hooks for centuries to catch saltwater and fresh fish. In 2005, Forbes chose the fish hook as one of the “The Top Twenty Most Important Tools” in man’s history. Fish hooks are commonly attached to a lure device or some form of a fishing line, which connects the fisherman to the fish caught.

Fish hooks have a lot of varieties. Materials, sizes, designs, and shapes vary depending on the use. Fish hooks are created for general fishing as well as for specialised or limited applications. For bait fishing, fish hooks are designed to hold several sorts of dead, processed, live or artificial baits. For fly fishing, they resemble fish prey. For lure fishing, they are crafted to be integrated or attached to devices that apparently symbolise fish prey.

The fish hook has been used by man for several thousands of years. Examples of initially recorded fish hooks came from Palestine at 7000 BC. Man has skilfully made fish hooks from materials such as human and animal bones, shells, horns, bronze, iron, and stone. In the late 1950s, Norwegians kept using juniper wood for crafting Burbot Hooks. In Europe, steel hooks of high quality started to appear in the 1600s and making hooks became a professional task.
